New on video store shelves and up for extensive discussion in this episode is...

  • Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction (1994) and Jackie Brown (1997) on Blu-ray - Both films making their debut on blu-ray, with Pulp Fiction getting a little extra love in the form of newly produced special features: New Interviews with the Cast and a Critic's Retrospective on the Movie's Place in Film History with Elvis Mitchel and Scott Foundas.
  • The Honeymooners: Lost Episodes 1951-1957 - The Complete Restored Series on DVD - A 15-disc set running more than 3,000 minutes. It's everything a Honeymooner's fan could want. Really. There's 30 sketches in the set that have never been on DVD, 18 of which haven't been seen since they originally aired in the 1950s. It's $139.00, but all sorts of goodness.
  • Poltergeist II (1986) on Blu-ray - John recalls the horrors of that "attack of the braces" scene. "A dental nightmare."
  • Hero's Island (1961) on DVD - From the MGM Limited Edition Collection, starring James Mason and a young Harry Dean Stanton.
  • Irvin Kirshner's Robocop 2 (1990) on Blu-ray - Featuring all those pre-CGI go-motion effects by the wizardly Phil Tippet.
  • Manhunter (1986) on Blu-ray - Starring a young Stephen Lang (Avatar and Terra Nova) and featuring another psycho bad guy performance by Tom Noonan (Robocop 2)
  • Vidal Sassoon: The Movie (2011) on DVD and Blu-ray - Who would have thought we'd enjoy this film? You've got to love the way Mr. Sassoon did Mia Farrow's hair for Rosemary's Baby, and this doc shows you how that transpired.
  • Ken Burn's and Lynn Novick's Prohibition on DVD and Blu-ray - I'm 4-hours into this 6-hour doc (a 3-disc blu-ray set). Where did the time go?
  • Brian De Palma's Dressed to Kill (1980) on Blu-ray - a film that must be seen again to be appreciated. This new Blu-ray offers some nice special features, including The Making of Dressed to Kill and An Appreciation by Keith Gordon Featurette, which is rather insightful.

Also on tap ...

- I recommend 'Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone,' which is now playing in New York and L.A.
- John recomends 'The Hollies: Look Through Any Window,' which is new to DVD
- I'm inspired to take a stand for journalists before Boston's 'Real Steel' screening
